Dairy cows in an automated milking system

Farmed animals

Our global food system is pushing us to a tipping point. Each year, we farm 70 billion land animals for food globally, and tragically, two-thirds of them are raised on factory farms.

The crisis with our global food system

The way we produce food is not only cruel to animals, but also harms our planet. Factory farming, which drives the animal feed trade and climate change, is destroying habitats and breeding antimicrobial resistant bacteria that get into waterways and meat products. It's a cycle that challenges both our stewardship of the earth and our humanity.

World Animal Protection is fighting to stop this. We believe animals like pigs and cows deserve to live better lives, and we all deserve healthy food that's produced with much less harm. We're all in this together, and we need to make choices that are good for animals, people, and our planet.

Our goal is to ensure farmed animals live good lives by transforming the global food system.

Our work

Advancing sustainable practices:

We work in collaboration with progressive food companies, governments, and local communities to rethink how food is produced. We are driving forward research, advocacy, and direct action to uplift animal welfare in agriculture, setting new benchmarks for care and respect.

Ending factory farming:

The growth of factory farming stands in the way of creating a humane, sustainable and equitable food system. We tackle this head-on, promoting improved animal welfare standards and championing humane alternatives. Our aim is clear: end the cycle of abuse that is inherent in intensive farming operations, advocating for practices that honour the sentience of animals.

Empowering consumers:

We can all do more when we know more. We’re committed to ensuring that all farm animals are treated humanely and helping you, as a consumer, understand exactly what that means. Through awareness campaigns, we guide consumers towards choices that favour animal welfare and environmental sustainability.

Driving global action:

We unite with partners around the world, harnessing our collective strength to create widespread change. From local communities to international forums, we are a driving force for policies that prioritize animal welfare and environmental stewardship.

Pushing for legal protections:

Our advocacy for strong legal protections is about ensuring the well-being of farm animals are clear and meaningful in legislation. Through tireless campaigning urging Parliamentarians to take action, we work to secure the humane treatment of animals across all aspects of food production.
