Eat less meat

Campaign

We envision a future where animals, our well-being and the planet thrive. Reducing global meat consumption is crucial to creating a food system that is humane, equitable, sustainable, resilient and capable of feeding the world.

Animal welfare:

Factory farming subjects billions of animals to inhumane living conditions. Choosing to eat less meat and other animal products will reduce the scale of this suffering.

  • Direct impact: Reducing meat consumption decreases demand, leading to fewer animals in factory farms.
  • Animal lives: 95,000 saved every minute with reduced meat consumption.

Environmental benefits:

The meat industry has a vast ecological footprint, affecting everything from clean air and water to protecting forests.

  • Reduced emissions: Meat production is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Swapping one meat-based meal per week can save nearly 4 kg of CO2 emissions.
  • Habitat preservation: Agriculture, especially for animal feed, is responsible for 80% of global deforestation.

Health advantages:

A diet with less meat can lead to improved health outcomes and help combat public health crises.

  • Nutrition: Plant-rich diets can lower the risk of chronic illness including some types of cancer and heart disease.
  • AMR reduction: Around 75% of antibiotics are used in animal agriculture, contributing to AMR. Eating less meat can help combat the rise of antibiotic-resistant superbugs.

Resource efficiency:

While meat and dairy provide just 18% of calories and 37% of protein, they use 83% of farmland.

  • Food security: Plant-based diets use crops more efficiently, potentially feeding more people.
  • Conservation: A single meatless day a week can lead to substantial water savings.

Economic impact:

Switching to plant-based meals not only benefits your health and the planet but also offers significant cost savings. With plant-based proteins typically being more affordable than their meaty counterparts, individuals can enjoy a decrease in their annual grocery expenses. Plant-based foods have many economic benefits for the country too.

  • Cost savings: Incorporating plant-based meals can save an average of $100 annually.
  • Affordability: Plant-based proteins like beans and lentils are often less expensive than meat.
  • Economic growth: Canada, being the largest producer and exporter of dry peas and lentils is perfectly positioned to harness the rising demand for plant-based protein.

Our work

Advocating for dietary shifts:

Choosing how we eat is complex and includes budget, access, traditions and many factors. But even small changes can result in massive transformation. We don’t need to be vegan, or even vegetarian to make an impact. Simply reducing your meat and animal product consumption helps.

Supporting sustainable agriculture:

We advocate for farming practices that are kinder to animals and the planet, working with producers to explore and implement sustainable, humane alternatives to current methods.

Influencing food companies:

We're urging food businesses to offer a wider array of plant-based options. Your dining choices have the power to influence menus and product offerings, steering companies toward more sustainable, animal-friendly products. And popular restaurant chains have the power and influence to change diets on a larger scale.

Public health and nutrition:

We highlight the health benefits of plant-based diets and support policies that encourage and incentivize more people to choose plant-based foods.
