32 day old broiler chickens in an industrial shed

Tell KFC Canada to do better by chickens

Chickens are intelligent, social animals that have feelings. They deserve better lives.

We can’t allow the suffering of Canadian chickens to continue.

KFC in the UK and five countries in Europe have committed to giving their chickens more room to move around and enrichments, such as hay bales, so they can perch, forage and flap their wings. They’ve agreed to use slower growing breeds with better health outcomes. This is all part of the Better Chicken Commitment to improve the welfare of chickens in their supply chain.

KFC Canada, however, has not committed to giving their chickens better lives.

While KFC Canada has shown progress by offering a plant-based menu option, it has not committed to giving their chickens better lives. Chickens served by KFC Canada are among the millions of chickens raised on industrial farms in Canada each year. These chickens are tightly packed with up to 10 thousand birds being housed in a single shed. As the chickens grow larger, their mobility is impaired due to their overgrown size and painful leg injuries.

The chicken industry uses ”fast-growing breeds” which are chickens bred to grow to their full size in an average of just six weeks. This accelerated growth rate, combined with low light levels and insufficient space to move, may lead to serious health problems including heart and lung failure, muscle weakness and painful leg injuries causing lameness.

Chickens deserve better lives. If KFC in the UK and five countries in Europe can commit to this, why can’t KFC in Canada? Call on KFC Canada to sign the Better Chicken Commitment.

A better way is possible

We know a better way is possible. KFC in the UK and six countries in Europe have shown us the way. The Better Chicken Commitment gives chickens the things that help keep them happy and healthy in higher welfare conditions.

As KFC in the UK have acknowledged, “animal welfare is essential for high quality food”. Forcing chickens to live in cramped and barren conditions is not high welfare. It’s bad for the chickens and it’s bad for us. Chickens deserve better and so do you. Call on KFC Canada to sign the Better Chicken Commitment.
